True story, my introduction to advertising was literally a baptism by fire. 9mm submachine gun fire.
You see, my first proper gig was at a boutique agency called Balasoglou & Martin where my first assignment was working on the NZSAS account. That’s the Special Air Service. You know, ‘Who Dares Wins’ and all that. I had an all-access pass to watch our elite soldiers training, interview them and develop something we called the Prep Pack to help potential recruits get ready for the regiment’s gruelling selection process.
Since then, I’ve driven a $250,000 Audi R8 around Hampton Downs at 230kmph. I’ve stayed at one of Marlborough’s most awarded wineries to become immersed in their culture (and equally steeped in their fine products). I've hung out of helicopters filming pro snowboarders in the Southern Alps. I’ve hung out on set with All Blacks, Grammy-winning pop stars, Prime Ministers, a prickly tuatara, and an even pricklier German ex-supermodel. Yep, all in a day’s work.
My dad used to tell me I should get a real job. Mind you, he was a spinal surgeon.
Anyhow, all I know is that I love this bonkers business we're in. And the thing I love most is cracking a good idea, crafting well-written copy, and the collaborative process that makes the work really shine.
